“By remembering St. Mark’s in his estate plans, Ran extended a lifetime of loyalty into a gift that will help future St. Markers thrive.”

Dr. Ivory D. Hills, Head of School

St. Mark’s is honored to celebrate the enduring legacy of Ranlet “Ran” Miner Jr. ’54, whose deep affection for the School shaped decades of leadership, service, and friendship. Ran passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by purpose, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to helping young people thrive.

Ran’s relationship with St. Mark’s stretched across his entire life. As a student, he was a Monitor, earned the Harold Hayes Prize, volunteered at Brantwood Camp, sang in the Choir, and was a proud member of the St. Mark’s Society. He played Football, Ice Hockey, and Crew—serving as captain—and embodied the spirit of engagement that would define his future service.

After graduating from Hamilton College in 1958, Ran enlisted in the Marine Corps, becoming a Platoon Commander with the 6th Marine Regiment. His leadership, integrity, and clarity of purpose—qualities familiar to all who knew him—guided him throughout his military service and beyond.

Ran and his wife Beth built a life together in Minnesota, where he spent 39 years on the faculty of St. Paul Academy, teaching history and government before becoming admissions director and college counselor. He also lent his thoughtful leadership to organizations including The Nature Conservancy, the National Eagle Center, YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, and North Haven Conservation Partners.

Ran remained devoted to St. Mark’s throughout his adult life. He served as a class agent from 1993 to 2025, as a Trustee from 1995 to 2006, and as a member of the Alumni Executive Committee from 2001 to 2006. His experience as a skilled educator and administrator made him a trusted voice in Trustee discussions, and he was awarded the Potter Miller Trustee Prize in 2006 for his outstanding leadership and service.

Most recently, Ran ensured that his commitment to future generations of St. Markers would continue by remembering St. Mark’s in his estate plans. His bequest reflects a lifetime of loyalty and belief in the School’s mission—a testament to the powerful role St. Mark’s played in his life and the community he cherished.

We are profoundly grateful to honor Ran’s legacy and to celebrate the impact he will continue to have on St. Mark’s students for years to come.
